Discover the Hunger Forts educational trail
During a pleasant walk in the hills through forests and vineyards, you’ll be able to learn interesting facts about the history of the canton of Ticino and enjoy the magnificent view of the Piano di Magadino and the entire Bellinzona region.
Simply alight at the “Camorino, Villaggio” stop and follow the information signs that guide walkers along this fascinating route. Five hunger forts were built in this area: five towers with typical names in local dialect: Ai Scarsitt, Ai Munt, Ala Pélera, Al Sass dal Camósc and Al Pian di Bur. These works of art were constructed for military purposes to ward off a potential attack from the Austrians (which never came).
The name “hunger forts” was given by the locals who, thanks to the towers commissioned by the Confederation, were able to overcome a difficult period.
